Planning staff backs plaque mitigation for historic rail corridor on Point Of The Mountain alignment

Planning staff briefed the council on UTA’s study for the Point Of The Mountain light-rail alignment and the review by historic-preservation authorities. The study found canals and two railroad corridors of historical interest; staff explained the only railroad segment with an adverse effect is the Union Pacific/Utah Southern corridor that the proposed light rail would use. Staff recommended the city concur with the agency’s mitigation proposal — an interpretive sign with a plaque detailing the rail corridor’s history — and to forward a letter of support to the transit agency.
Council members indicated general support for the modest mitigation measure, noting there are no standing historic structures in the corridor. Staff will draft the letter for the mayor to sign and forward to the transit authority as requested.
