Parks staff outlines trail expansions, ballfield lighting and stormwater fixes

Parks staff presented a wide-ranging update on capital projects, saying the city has finished resurfacing roadway infrastructure and is installing ballfield lights at South Fork to increase usable hours. The staff member noted increased use and regional interest in city facilities: “We’ve also got interest from the National Disc Golf Association to hold the tournament here next year,” the Parks and Recreation staff said.
Staff briefed the council on multi-phase trail work: phase 1 of the Mayor’s Trail is complete, phase 2 (shown in the teal map) is out to bid and could link 114th to 123rd, and phase 3 is currently unfunded; staff explained that wetlands permitting with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is required for work that touches wet areas. The presentation also covered planned removal of invasive Russian olive trees, bank stabilization using gabions, and a Suncrest storm-drain package that will fund four trail bridges and check dams to stop repeated trail washouts. Staff said a previously bid Bubbling Brook project returned bids ~$70,000 over budget and will be rebid with the expectation of a later budget amendment.
The council asked for mileage estimates and access details for specific trail segments; staff committed to provide additional engineering numbers and a schedule for the upcoming bids and construction windows.
