Jen Garrett asked whether a line item showing $16,400,000 in debt service included the larger item on the agenda described by speakers as a $205,000,000 borrowing and its estimated $17,000,000 annual debt service: "...does the $164,400,000 dollars that is being shown in the budget tonight include that $205,000,000 debt service." Jancey Vincent, who identified herself as a newly elected board member for District 5, said she stood against “the budget of $205” and urged the district to be fiscally responsible, citing reports of families withdrawing from public education.
Another public commenter, Gregory Pelham, asked the board to remove politics from budget decisions and prioritize students. The public comments prompted board members and staff to address the source and timing of debt-service figures during later budget discussion and to explain that some debt-service lines represented previously issued debt rather than newly adopted borrowing.
Speakers tied the larger borrowing figure to later agenda items and expressed concern about long-term fiscal impacts. The board proceeded to consider and adopt tentative millage and budget resolutions later in the meeting.
