Superintendent and staff recommended surrendering the Alta Vista dependent charter, citing the oversight burden on limited district staff, the time costs required to maintain charter reporting, and the risk that a charter operating in district boundaries could siphon enrollment from the three brick‑and‑mortar AUSD schools. Several trustees asked staff to bring a formal action item on surrender to the May meeting so the board can vote after public input; others preferred holding the charter in reserve through the renewal window. No action was taken tonight.
