Auditor gives Auburn Union School District a clean opinion, board approves 2023-24 audit

Lily Novoa, a CPA with Christy White Associates, told the Auburn Union School District board that auditors issued an unmodified opinion on the district's 2023-24 financial statements and related compliance reports.
"We have an unmodified opinion. And although that sounds lackluster that actually is the best opinion that you can receive," Novoa said, summarizing the four audit reports (financial statements, internal controls, federal compliance and state compliance). She noted one audit finding related to attendance reporting that reflected a small misclassification between grade-level ADA counts (a net variance of fewer than two students) and two standard audit adjustments to accounts receivable and a fund-balance transfer.
The chief business officer explained the findings largely reflected prior-year corrections and that no material weaknesses or significant deficiencies were identified. After board members asked clarifying questions, the board voted to accept the audit report (item 9a).
The acceptance moves the district from unaudited trial balances to a finalized audited set of financial statements and requires staff to continue addressing the attendance-reporting protocols flagged by auditors.
