Board hears district goals and data challenges; FastBridge used as common assessment

The Glenwood City School District superintendent presented the board with a district-goals synopsis that centers on English language arts, mathematics and improving student–staff relationships.

He said the district is using a common assessment (FastBridge) to measure growth across grades and noted the challenges the district faces in creating a reliable baseline. "We use the local assessment FastBridge," the superintendent said, explaining the choice to maintain a single districtwide assessment to compare grade-level growth. He cautioned that historical inconsistencies limit immediate shifts from growth-based goals to grade-level proficiency targets.

Board members and administrators discussed the need for better dashboards and training to make data actionable. Administrators acknowledged a stalled dashboard project and low login rates; the superintendent said in-house approaches and EduCLIMBER training are part of plans to improve data literacy and to identify curriculum gaps that may explain sudden score drops between grades.

Members asked about measuring school climate and bullying; the superintendent said repeated reporting and clear definitions are necessary before the district can reliably show improvement. The board asked staff to return with clearer dashboards and plans for admin training to use the assessment data for instruction.
