The Avalon City Council approved a $50,000 change order to extend cultural‑resource monitoring at the 5 Corners site to address previously unearthed sensitive materials.
Public works reported that much of the sensitive material was found behind an existing rock wall and likely originated from a secondary placement tied to the Metropole Hotel fire; staff said the work will include continued excavation, sampling, and coordination with Native American representatives for repatriation. "We anticipate the sculpture, the scope of the cultural resource monitoring work is winding down... we're setting that up just so that we don't have to come back before December," the project manager said.
Council authorized the city manager to execute change order number 2 for the professional services agreement with Montrose Environmental Solutions Inc., increasing the contract sum by $50,000 to a new total of $216,128.
Next steps: cultural monitoring will continue through the excavation phase, with repatriation planning for recovered materials and project scheduling to resume construction activities.
