Council asks staff to pursue standardized notices and an address-lookup tool for utility work

Frustrated by recurring instances in which homeowners discovered telecom work in front of their houses without advance notice, councilors asked staff to use available permitting and franchise-agreement levers to strongly encourage contractors to notify residents and provide a reliable contact for questions. Councilor Lowe said the city has precedent for door-hanger notifications and the request asks staff to standardize that approach.
The council also asked staff to evaluate a public-facing address lookup or GIS tool so residents can check upcoming work on their street; staff said that tool could be a significant IT and GIS lift but that evaluation is feasible. The request for council action passed unanimously, 11–0, with staff noting the item will require cross-department coordination.
