SFUSD pilots EDIA AI math tutor; staff report early gains among users and outline evaluation

Staff described EDIA, an AI-based math tutor piloted with 9th and 10th graders, as a voluntary supplemental tool that has shown early positive findings in the district's pilot and will be subject to a more rigorous WestEd evaluation.
"EDIA is an AI based math tutor that has been offered to 9th and 10th grader students. And students have been big fans," staff said in the presentation, noting students reported the interface provided hints rather than answers and that higher EDIA usage correlated with greater STAR Math gains in fall-to-winter comparisons.
Presenters said EDIA participation was optional during the pilot and that initial uptake varied by teacher and site; staff are studying participation patterns and will report further when WestEd completes a full analysis. The Gates Foundation provided funding for the pilot rollout and WestEd will conduct the end-of-year impact study, staff said.
Board members asked how to increase teacher uptake and what program elements (in-class protected time versus homework) drive better student use. Staff said the next steps include teacher-led demonstrations, student focus groups and analysis of which student profiles benefit most from EDIA.
