Parks director reports high pool use, new playground and a certified arborist funded by forestry grant

The parks and recreation director told the council the Civic Center is in its annual shutdown week for maintenance and that contractors have finished a new west-side parking area. The director highlighted recent capital work including the May ribbon-cutting at the Placzek Park playground and an Urban and Community Forestry grant (about $17,450) that paid for removal of the city's final ash trees, planting seven new trees and training costs that allowed a staff member to become a certified arborist.
On recreation metrics, the director said the aquatic center had a strong season and "we should have eclipsed 21,000 for the summer after today with still 12 more days to go." He gave the pool closing date as Sunday, Aug. 9, noted swim-team and lesson participation, and described upcoming fall sports programming and construction schedules for Sam Crawford and Hackberry Park projects.
