Library director Denise reports strong summer programs, says she plans to retire

Library director Denise told the City Council the library checked out more than 8,600 items this summer, hosted nearly 700 youth-program attendees and evening adult programs, and that she plans to retire; staff have begun recruitment for a successor.
Denise, the library department head, told the City Council that the library had a busy summer and that construction at the building has caused some disruption but remains on schedule. "We checked out over 8,600 items this summer and our May, June kids programs had over almost 700 attendees," she said, noting additional adult programs that drew 235 attendees and thanking the Friends of the Library and the library foundation for underwriting many special events.
Denise said the construction target is to complete major work by the end of November with punch-list items in December. She also announced, "I am planning to retire this year," and said staff (including Melissa and the personnel committee with two library board members) have begun the hiring process for a successor. Councilors asked a few follow-up questions about project timing and transition planning.
