State webinar urges districts to grow network of certified academic language specialists with IDEA funds

Wendy Brooks told webinar participants that building a local network of certified academic language therapists (CALT) and practitioners (CALP) is a high-impact strategy often underutilized in Louisiana.
"IDEA funds can support the training, stipends, practicum time, and even substitute coverage in classrooms so that educators in training can engage in CALT or CALP sessions," Brooks said, adding that districts can include midpoint stipends, completion bonuses or service agreements to promote retention of newly trained staff.
She recommended that districts factor in practicum time and substitute coverage costs when planning and ensure that trained individuals provide services to students with disabilities rather than being reassigned to general duties.
