Targeted professional learning, not generic training, recommended for dyslexia supports

During the webinar, Wendy Brooks urged school systems to prioritize targeted professional learning that directly improves how teachers support students with disabilities, including dyslexia.
"This should go far beyond generic professional learning and instead should focus on targeted training that directly improves how teachers support students with disabilities such as dyslexia," Brooks said, naming explicit instruction, multisensory structured literacy and data use as key content areas.
She emphasized that training must have a clear connection to student access and progress; otherwise, the expenditure may not be allowable under IDEA. Districts were encouraged to document how professional learning time and content relate to IEP goals and measurable improvements for students with disabilities.
