State defines dyslexia and urges consistent language to prevent misconceptions

At the start of the session, Wendy Brooks read Louisiana's policy definition of dyslexia from the state's guide: "dyslexia as an unexpected difficulty in reading for an individual who has the intelligence to be a much better reader, most commonly caused by a difficulty in phonological processing." She said that clear and consistent definitions help teachers, leaders, SBLCs and families work from a shared foundation and reduce misconceptions.
Brooks cautioned educators against common misunderstandings, noting the handbook seeks to prevent beliefs that dyslexia is caused by vision problems, lack of effort, or low intelligence. She referenced LDOE's earlier Guide to Dyslexia in Louisiana (published in 2024) and said an updated version is expected in December 2026.
