Wendy Brooks, a member of the Teaching and Learning Literacy team at the Louisiana Department of Education, introduced the Louisiana Dyslexia Family Handbook and described it as "a family-facing resource that clarifies the state's dyslexia screening, identification, and support processes." She told participants the handbook is embedded in LDOE slides and available through participant resources.
Brooks said the handbook was developed with input from school leaders, dyslexia specialists and parents and is intended to create consistent language for educators and families. "When parents, teachers, interventionists, and leaders are all referencing the same definitions and steps, practice becomes more consistent," she said, adding that the handbook is designed to be used in existing structures such as SBLC meetings and family nights to strengthen family engagement rather than create a separate initiative.
