Undersheriff Ames told the Elko County Commission on Jan. 21 that the sheriff’s office is seeing increases in domestic-violence and suicidal calls. He said 2025 will likely close near 400 domestic-violence calls and that suicidal calls have climbed from 128 in 2024 to about 145 through November 2025, reversing a previous decline.
Ames described on-the-ground response practices: deputies use text outreach and carry resource cards provided in partnership with local suicide-prevention organizations, and they will generally maintain a perimeter and seek to de-escalate by phone when there is not an imminent threat. "We unfortunately had 3 suicides over the last few days just here," he said, urging community awareness and immediate help-seeking.
Commissioners discussed expanding public information about the 988 crisis line and possible use of state public-health funds for local outreach. One commissioner noted studies showing high de-escalation rates for 988 calls and suggested wrapping the 988 number on buses and social-media messaging; staff recommended using website and social-media channels as efficient outreach tools.
Why it matters: An upward trend in these calls signals strain on first responders and highlights gaps in behavioral-health resources in a geographically dispersed county. The board discussed budget options and coordination with state-funded programs to improve prevention and response.
What’s next: Staff will consider outreach options (including possible dedicated budget items) and provide more specific cost estimates for bringing 988 public-awareness activities into the fiscal planning process.
