San Gabriel recognizes new officers and firefighters as department staffing improves

The council honored new police hires and promotions and welcomed five firefighters who recently completed probation and an in-house training academy. Police Chief Elizalde introduced Officer Derek Young (hired June 2026) and named promotions: Andrea Fuentes to sergeant, Alan Sam to lieutenant and Dan Gosserind to captain. "The San Gabriel Police Department continues to evolve into a premier law enforcement agency," Chief Elizalde said.
Fire Chief Wallace presented five probationary firefighters who completed additional training and will go on to paramedic school; he noted the department is expected to be fully staffed for the first time in recent memory once the class completes all steps. The council and community members joined for a ceremonial oath and photos following the recognitions.
