Council approves updated Veterans Memorial design, authorizes DVDC construction documents

The council unanimously approved an updated conceptual design for the San Gabriel Veterans Memorial and authorized staff to execute an amendment with DVD Creative (DVDC) to develop construction documents. Community Services Director Rebecca Perez said the design reflects input from the Veterans Memorial Coalition and commissions and recommended DVDC continue into construction drawings; staff reported a DVDC cost proposal of $128,615 and requested an additional $12,615 in the FY 2026–27 budget for completion of the construction documents.
Designer Gary Vasquez described the memorial plan—a pergola leading to a 12‑foot‑6‑inch arched memorial wall with recessed glass-tile imagery, a flagpole, a battlefield cross and sculpture elements, and a terracotta-brick ledge for flowers—and noted the wall was designed to evolve as names are added. Coalition members stressed name-size legibility and space for additional names; community speaker Teresa Olivas Husiani said, "This has been a journey of nearly 7 years, and it means so much to see this vision finally becoming a reality." Council approved the staff recommendations and adopted Resolution 26‑42 to amend the budget and proceed with construction documents.
