Board votes to opt out of open enrollment and join Kent ISD collaborative schools-of-choice

The board moved and seconded each motion and approved them by voice vote. On the section 105 motion the chair read a motion referencing the state school aid act and asked for a voice vote; the board responded "Aye." The board then moved on to a motion to opt out of section 105c and again approved by voice vote. Finally, the board voted to participate in the Kent ISD Collaborative Schools of Choice program for the 2026-27 school year; that motion was also seconded and approved by voice vote.
Superintendent Kirby said opting out gives the district flexibility to limit placements and to place students where openings exist rather than accepting all applicants by preference alone.
