A district instructional presenter outlined new K-5 Project Lead The Way STEM electives that embed science standards and nonfiction literacy into younger students' schedules, saying the courses provide collaborative problem-solving and stronger engagement for elementary students.
The presenter said the instructional department is vetting two different elementary ELA curricula and running pilots before a final selection. The board was also told Northern High School's AP Seminar will conduct a monthly review of the book Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson (grade 10). The transcript referred to the author with a likely transcription error; the book and author are well known and the board indicated it had previously approved the book for use in a limited form.
Additional curriculum notes included a planned visit from literacy expert Nell Duke for junior-kindergarten programming and an Earth and space science unit completed in class as an example of student engagement.
