The Durand Area Schools Board of Education unanimously approved a Voluntary Severance Plan (VSP) at its June 8, 2026 regular meeting. Member John Dennis moved the plan and member Nick Taylor supported the motion; the roll-call vote was 7–0 in favor.
The VSP opens an application window from June 9, 2026, through 12:00 Noon on July 24, 2026. Under the approved terms, the plan requires at least one teacher to participate and caps participation at eight teachers. Payouts are set at 25% of the teacher’s base salary for the 2025–26 school year and will be paid over one year, with half the payment issued in August 2026 and the remaining half in September 2026. The motion was presented by member John Dennis and seconded by member Nick Taylor.
Board members discussed the measure in the context of the district’s budget pressures and staffing considerations presented earlier by Superintendent Knapp. The board recorded the formal language in the motion: "The plan will be paid if at least one (1) teacher voluntarily participates in the plan with a maximum of eight (8) teachers. The payout will be twenty-five (25%) of the teacher’s base salary for the 25-26 school year and will be paid over one year, with half the payment paid in August 2026 and the other half paid in September 2026." The board adopted the plan on a unanimous roll-call vote.
