Board hears PBIS update and curriculum reviews as chronic absenteeism persists

A curriculum presentation at the Dec. 8 meeting said the district is in its third year of implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and is now in its second year of reviewing behavioral data to guide interventions.
"We are in our 3rd year of PBIS implementation in the district, but our 2nd year being able to review the data that is being collected in terms of behavior," the presenter said, and emphasized efforts to define appropriate and inappropriate behavior across diverse school communities. The presenter identified chronic absenteeism as a central focus, noting that nationally chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% of school days — "so for us, that would be 18 days of school." The report said absenteeism remains concentrated at the secondary level.
The curriculum team also outlined ongoing curriculum reviews: K–5 ELA pilots comparing CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts) and Houghton Mifflin, middle-school math finalists Amplify and Imagine Learning, and planned ELA revamps for grades 11–12 following prior changes for 9th and 10th graders. The presenter said testing and classroom trials are underway before any adoption decisions.
Board members asked clarifying questions and were told staff will continue to work with families and educators to improve attendance and finalize curriculum recommendations for future board consideration.
