Lake Shore board to repeal and replace most 5000-series policies, sets adoption timeline

Dr. DiPonio, a district staff member, told the Lake Shore Board of Education that the district intends to repeal and replace the current 5000-series board policies and adopt the proposed replacements.
"The current Board policies will be repealed and replaced with the proposed policies (except the bullying policy) at the 7/27/26 meeting," Dr. DiPonio said, and he added that a public hearing on Aug. 3 will address the bullying policy and that the Thrun policy will replace the district's bullying policy following that hearing. The board had previously been given time to review the proposed package in advance of the meeting.
Why it matters: the 5000 series covers student- and family-facing rules that shape everyday school operations — attendance, permission forms, student conduct and related procedures. The board set a near-term timetable: most policies are slated for repeal-and-replace on July 27, 2026, while the bullying policy will be addressed after a public hearing on Aug. 3.
Board members asked clarifying questions during the review about multiple policy sections (pledge, work permits, recording rules and permission forms) and about the implementation timeline. Elizabeth Munger arrived late to the meeting (6:20 p.m.) and later joined the unanimous motion to adjourn at 6:50 p.m. The adjournment motion passed with five yeas, zero nays and two absences.
