Mendon board approves 2026-27 budgets, projecting 24.27% general fund balance

The Mendon Community School District Board of Education approved the 2025-26 final budgets and the proposed 2026-27 budgets at its June 22 meeting, with unanimous votes of those present.
Business Manager Lisa VanZoest said the district’s final 2025-26 general fund shows a fund balance of "approximately 30%" pending audit, and that she has budgeted down by 15 students for 2026-27. After proposed raises for the master agreement, support staff and administration, VanZoest said the proposed general fund projects a 24.27% fund balance for 2026-27. The board voted to adopt the general fund budget on a motion by Jesse King and support from Sonya Moyle; the motion carried 6-0 with one member absent.
VanZoest told the board the Food Service final fund balance was 31.44% for 2025-26 and that she projects a 38.15% fund balance for 2026-27, noting that à la carte sales are down due to universal free breakfast and lunch. She also reported Special Revenue (Fund 29) finished the year with a fund balance of 190.36% and is projected at 211.68% for the coming year; she reminded members these accounts reflect fundraiser and donation activity and thus vary.
Board members asked about enrollment sensitivity and budget risk; no formal amendments were made during the meeting. The board approved the food service and Fund 29 budgets in separate motions and carried those votes 6-0 with one absent.
