Superintendent: operating levy needed to avoid staff cuts, maintain programs and bus service

Superintendent Redemske told the Albany Area Schools board that passage of an operating levy in November would enable the district to maintain academic programs, preserve current teacher‑student classroom ratios, continue extracurricular and co‑curricular offerings, and could create an opportunity to restore bus pick‑up and drop‑off within a one‑mile radius around the schools. As Redemske put it in the July 22 work session: "passage of the operating levy will ensure that current academic programs, teacher-student classroom ratios, extracurricular and co-curricular offerings can be maintained, and there may be an opportunity to restore bus pick-up/drop-off within the 1-mile radius around the schools."

He warned the board that if the levy fails, the district will face very limited options outside personnel reductions because "three-quarters of our expenses are tied to staffing," and that would have "a significant impact on class sizes, course offerings, student elective classes, student support services, and extracurricular offerings." The board also discussed potential policy responses the district could consider to reduce costs if revenues fall short, including changes to open enrollment and grade‑banding at the elementary level to align grade levels by building for operational efficiency. Redemske said staff are preparing communications for district residents (tax‑impact details and FAQs) ahead of the levy campaign.
