Council debates nonprofit allocations; some members push to protect HOP funding

Councilmembers discussed allocations to nonprofit agencies included in the proposed budget, with particular attention on funding for HOP, a local transportation/service provider. One councilmember urged caution given the budget deficit and recommended staying within the previously approved $95,000 total for nonprofits.
"I truly believe that we need to look at that number a little bit more closely, especially seeing where we are now in our budget," said a councilmember during the July 30 meeting. Another councilmember recommended allocating $85,000 to HOP and distributing the remaining funds among the other agencies so the total would match the previously approved $95,000.
Staff noted that reducing the HOP allocation could reduce service levels and that neighboring cities' allocations and service-area differences inform the comparison. Councilmembers asked staff to provide a table of options and the impact of reallocating funds ahead of the Aug. 4 meeting.
