Residents urge action on short-term rentals as threat to affordable housing on Vashon

During open discussion Joanne Herbert, a registered nurse and long-time resident, told the council she has heard multiple accounts of long-term housing being displaced by short-term rentals and asked what the council and county are doing to protect workers and longtime islanders.
"I heard that there are 1,600 Airbnbs on Vashon. Do you know the number?" Herbert asked, urging the council to press Seattle and King County representatives for options such as limits, lotteries or monitoring to preserve affordable housing for workers. Diane Emerson said King County is looking at short-term rental regulation countywide and that the comprehensive-plan work includes related housing proposals.
Other candidates and community members who spoke later emphasized housing as a principal concern for the island and said they would make it a focus during the upcoming board election and committee discussions. No regulatory action was taken at the meeting; attendees were advised King County staff would be invited to further explain countywide approaches at future briefings in coordination with the council.
