Island practitioner moves council to host forum on noxious-weed control, with and without herbicides

Steven Richmond, a contractor who said he has worked on forest restoration across King County for two decades, proposed that the Vashon Maury Community Council host a community forum focused on noxious-weed control and management alternatives.

"I move that the Vashon Maury Community Council ask King County to support a community forum on noxious weed control with and without herbicides by sending appropriate King County staff to the forum to be held in early 2025," Richmond said during the council's open discussion period. Diane Emerson, the council president, read the motion aloud and confirmed it had been seconded.

Supporters in the room and on Zoom suggested expanding invited expertise beyond King County to include University of Washington researchers and local organizations such as the Vashon Nature Center. Richmond said the forum would include short (roughly five-minute) presentations from practitioners and experts followed by a question-and-answer session. The motion will be discussed further and placed before members for a formal vote at the council's November meeting.

If approved by members, the forum would be a community-led event with invited county staff and outside experts; proponents said it would give residents a structured opportunity to compare trade-offs, costs and ecological outcomes of herbicide-based and non-chemical weed-control strategies.
