The Fayston Selectboard debated how to clarify its holiday-pay policy after the road crew, which works 10-hour shifts Monday through Thursday, was told it would receive holiday pay for Friday, July 3 (observed for July 4). Selectboard member Chuck Martel said the crew “has been told they will receive holiday pay for Friday July 3rd (for July 4th),” noting the crew’s atypical schedule; Ron Graves raised that the policy states holiday pay equals an employee’s “normal workday,” which could conflict with paying eight hours to employees whose shifts are longer or shorter than eight hours.
Michael Jordan said the town budget assumes eight hours of holiday pay and proposed the future policy clarify eligibility and hours; he suggested the town could define full-time as employees working 24 hours per week when rewriting the handbook. Selectboard Assistant Madison Vasseur will survey how other towns handle holiday pay and seasonal-employee rules. For 2026 the board agreed that full- and part-time employees will receive the holiday-pay adjustment; the board did not take a formal roll-call vote on a permanent policy change during the meeting.
