Pojoaque Valley School Board members approved a recommendation to replace the district's soccer and softball turf and to award the project to Fielder's Choice for $622,978.35, staff said on Wednesday.
Facilities staff described the turf surfaces as having reached the end of their functional lifespan with visible wear, compaction and hardening in high‑traffic areas. “Most importantly, this is a student safety issue for our student athletes,” a facilities presenter said, explaining the proposal includes a shock pad to improve impact absorption and help the field pass GMAX testing for soccer. The vendor package was the lower of two comparable proposals and would, staff said, save the district roughly $47,930 compared with the higher bid.
Board members pressed for clearer contract language removing vague "as needed" wording and to ensure the district's scope-of‑work and exclusions are explicit. Staff said the procurement contract and district scope document will be finalized to address miscellaneous costs and mobilization. Administration also noted the project would enable ADA improvements to bleacher access and that project timing is sensitive: presenters said waiting beyond June 1 risks approximately a 10 percent price increase because of rising materials and labor costs.
The motion to approve the contract passed by roll call; recorded votes show President Quintana, Vice President Lujan, Secretary Benavides, Member Velasquez and Member Mueller voting yes.
