Board honors students and staff with statewide NMSBA awards

The Milwaukee Valley School district board on May 13 recognized high school senior Karina Garcia as its nominee for the New Mexico School Board Association student scholarship and presented four staff with NMSBA Excellence in Student Achievement awards.
Chair (the meeting chair) read nomination excerpts describing Garcia’s academic record and leadership, noting she completed six AP courses, five honors courses and three dual‑credit courses and earned a 3.82 GPA. The board also confirmed a district scholarship that will provide $500 when Garcia enrolls in college.
Board members and an NMSBA region representative emphasized the statewide significance of the awards. "These awards are competed not only at the regional level, but at the state level," a New Mexico School Board Association representative said, adding that the district’s recipients will be showcased at upcoming statewide meetings. Board members then read nominations and presented certificates and plaques to Maria Carmona, Elizabeth Pacheco, Jenny Tallacci and Raquel Turner for demonstrated leadership, improved student outcomes and contributions to school culture.
The board noted the nominations were submitted by peers and highlighted nominees’ instructional leadership, mentorship of colleagues and work with students, including structured literacy and partnerships that support high‑need learners. The recognition segment concluded with brief remarks of thanks from recipients and an invitation for photos.
