Recreation staff report growing pickleball participation and say 'the Dutch' will train in Mission Viejo

Mark, representing Recreation and Community Services, told commissioners that memberships and participation at city facilities have increased following recent fee changes intended to boost memberships over drop-in usage. “As you recall, we increased our fees, for pickleball…again, we had some grumbling in the beginning, but things have mellowed out and, we hope to bring back some more information on that,” Mark said, adding that membership growth is already visible.
Mark also described a recently executed agreement with an entity he called “the Dutch,” saying, “We have signed the Dutch. They will be coming to Mission Viejo as our anchor, country, for, for a training site,” and said that interest from neighboring cities and other national Olympic committees may follow. Staff said some operational adjustments (court reservations and rotations) have been made to accommodate higher use.
