Parent urges immediate district action on educational technology and generative AI

Johnson said the move to 1:1 devices during the COVID-19 era has outpaced consideration of long-term learning impacts and described observed behaviors such as students watching videos and creating AI content during class time. “By making these devices mandatory, we have effectively stripped parents of our ability to manage the...unchecked experiment,” Johnson said, calling for a school-district tech working group, a full software audit and consideration of returning K–3 math and English to pen-and-paper instruction with parental opt-out for screens and mandatory parental consent before using generative AI on projects.
The superintendent and board thanked Johnson for raising the issue; staff noted the district has an 'off and away' policy and said they would consider requests for additional review and potential next steps.
