Jackson County to submit senior-center damage claim to county insurer (ICAP)

The Jackson County Board of Supervisors voted June 30 to submit the county's property claim for January's senior-center accident to the county's property insurer, ICAP, rather than accept the at-fault party's depreciated settlement offer.
An insurance presenter advising the county said ICAP carries replacement-cost coverage and would likely pay contractors to fully replace damaged property minus the county's $25,000 deductible, then pursue the at-fault carrier to recover depreciation and possibly the deductible. "So my recommendation would be that we file it through ICAP, make sure that it is a covered claim, make sure that it's, adjusted accordingly, and then see how it plays out with them handling it," the presenter said. Supervisors raised concerns about potential delays, whether existing contractors could be used and whether the claim would affect future premiums; the presenter said ICAP would likely work with current contractors and that an isolated, non-fault $35,000 loss should not meaningfully increase the county's pooled rates.
Supervisor Mike Siding moved to proceed with the ICAP submission; Nin Flagle seconded and the motion carried unanimously. The board directed staff to relay the decision to the senior-center claims examiner and asked the county's point people to coordinate with the ICAP adjuster when assigned. The county will initially pay its $25,000 deductible while ICAP handles adjustment and potential subrogation.
