Students pitch composting, e-waste drive and 'reduce by request' restaurant pledges

An Oak Creek student described a STEM project building a prototype cardboard 'sustainable food truck' that included gardens, recycling and composting. Lakeridge green-team officers, including Tara Reddy, outlined plans for an e-waste collection with Free Geek and described outreach to local restaurants to join a 'reduce by request' movement that has, the students said, helped prevent 8,100,000 utensils from being wasted nationwide and saved restaurants more than $200,000.
Students asked the district to consider composting systems and to coordinate with the city on possible ordinances that would reduce single-use plastics. Superintendent Shealy thanked the students and encouraged them to partner with the nutrition director and city leaders on next steps.
