Council approves renewal with Axon Enterprises; adds VR training and warranty replacements

The City Council approved a five-year renewal contract with Axon Enterprises for police equipment and services, including tasers, body cameras, cloud storage and redaction software, and a newly available virtual-reality (VR) training system.
Police Chief Stegall (Speaker 6) said the renewal keeps the department’s equipment under warranty so damaged cameras are replaced without direct cost to the city: "While we're under contract with Axon, everything is covered by warranty," he said. He described the contract as a bundled approach that avoids the higher cost of buying all equipment and supplies separately — a saving he estimated as "part of that $71,000 savings." Chief Stegall also said the department recently synced body cameras with the county CAD system for automatic download and categorization.
Chief Stegall explained the VR system will count toward the department’s required practice/shooting time and reduce the need to expend training cartridges. He noted cartridges are expensive: "$96 a piece, I think," he said. The council moved to approve the contract and passed the motion by voice vote.
The contract will be executed by the city and the police department will begin implementation, including VR demonstrations for the council and public.
