Vendor proposes vent diverters after repeated snow damage at fairgrounds

Don Swinker, chair of the Jackson County Board of Supervisors, opened the meeting and invited a vendor from Beckwith Roofing to address the board about problems at the county fairgrounds roof. Dan, the company representative, described repeated winters in which accumulated snow and rapid thawing caused large sheets of snow and ice to slide and damage the two-way vent caps used on the facility’s low-slope roof.
Dan explained how the vents are installed and why they have been damaged, and he proposed a retrofit: “I proposed a diverter, if you will, or a a vent protector that installs on the high side of the vent and just acts as a wedge allowing the stone ice to divert around it,” he told supervisors. He said the property had a snow-bar system installed previously but that, in the county’s case, it had not reliably protected the vents. Supervisors discussed manufacturer recourse and earlier snow-protection work on the roof (the chair referenced a prior $31,000 snow-protection expense). Dan agreed to email a formal proposal and material price and said he could provide a written quote the next day for the board to act on.
