The council conducted a first reading of Ordinance 16 o 7 to renew South Bend's utility excise tax at the existing 12% rate ahead of its year-end expiration.
"We're renewing it exactly the same as it's been," the Chair said during the first-reading presentation. Council moved and seconded the first reading; the chair called for a voice approval and the first-reading motion passed.
Staff and council did not propose any substantive changes to the tax language at this meeting; the item will return in subsequent meetings for formal adoption after the ordinance process.
