Midvale City Council sets Dec. 5 application deadline, schedules Dec. 10 meeting to fill mayoral vacancy

Mayor Pro-Tem Paul Glover and the Midvale City Council voted unanimously to set a Dec. 5 deadline for mayoral applicants and to hold a special meeting on Dec. 10 to interview candidates and appoint a successor after the mayor’s recent resignation. City Manager Matt Dahl told the council that "on Thursday, November 14, 2024, Mayor Marcus Stevenson resigned, effective immediately, and vacated the office of the mayor," and that state law requires the council to fill the vacancy within 30 days.
Dahl told the council the notice must give at least 14 calendar days’ public notice and explain how interested residents must submit their names for consideration; staff recommended a Dec. 10 special meeting to avoid overloading the Dec. 3 agenda. Council Member Dustin Gettel moved to set the dates; the motion was seconded by Council Member Heidi Robinson. The motion language recorded in the minutes states: "Council Member Dustin Gettel MOVED to suspend the rules and set December 10, 2024, at 6:00 PM as the Deadline for Individuals to Submit Their Names for Consideration to Fill the Vacancy of the Office of the Mayor and that we Schedule a Council Meeting on December 10, 2024, at 6 PM at Midvale City Hall to Interview qualified Candidates and Appoint a Candidate to Fill the Vacant Office of Mayor."
The council also discussed application logistics: staff will make the application available online and at City Hall, and applicants must submit materials in person to Rori Andreason in the Recorder’s Office. Council Member Bonnie Billings said she would like to see a letter of interest included with applications so the council has background information in advance. City Attorney Garrett Wilcox said the state code does not require an application fee for this process.
The vote on the motion was recorded as unanimous: Council Members Bonnie Billings, Paul Glover, Heidi Robinson, Bryant Brown and Dustin Gettel all voted "Aye." The special meeting to interview candidates and appoint a mayor is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Dec. 10, 2024, at Midvale City Hall; the application deadline is Thursday, Dec. 5, 2024, by 5:00 p.m. and submissions must be made in person to the Recorder’s Office.
