LOHS Green Team asks district to build cafeteria compost systems to cut food waste

Students representing the Lake Oswego High School Green Team told the board about student-led sustainability projects and asked the district to back broader, long-term infrastructure changes.
"Our mission is to promote sustainability and environmental consciousness in Lake Oswego High School through hands on educational programs, hands on events, and activism," Millie said as the group summarized work that includes cap-and-gown recycling and a community clothes bin. Millie said those efforts recycle materials, lower costs for seniors and supply funding for student projects.
Norwei Vo focused on food waste, saying the nutrition department has taken steps (reduced single-use plastics, electric delivery vehicles, kitchen composting), but cafeterias lack consistent student-facing compost systems. "Students are often expected to do the right thing, but the system is not actually built to support them," Norwei said, and argued a district-level approach would provide continuity beyond student turnover.
The students said partnerships with organizations such as Our Future and Future Climate Collective have opened statewide opportunities and could help fund or scale projects. Board members acknowledged the need to align facilities and curriculum to make sustainable choices the default and thanked students for their leadership.
