Sykesville council voted to increase the public‑works capital budget by $5,000 to permit purchase of a recommended electric zero‑turn mower on July 13, 2026. Staff said a recent price change on a comparable model reduced the purchase price and shortened the estimated payback period.
Public works staff explained the purchase was in the town’s capital improvement plan and that the original budget assumed a $15,000 purchase. "We are estimating around a 7 year payback period," staff said, "that's down to 4 years now if we go with this new model." Council members pressed for details about local service and battery replacement costs during a question-and-answer exchange. Staff said the closest distributor for the selected brand is in Severn and estimated battery replacement could cost on the order of $6,000 to $10,000.
Council discussion also touched on battery chemistry and warranty. One council member noted the recommended unit uses a lithium iron phosphate battery, which several participants described in the meeting as a safer chemistry. Staff said they would confirm warranty terms before finalizing the purchase. A motion to increase the public‑works capital line item passed; the mayor announced the motion carried and directed staff to proceed with the purchase under the adjusted allocation.
The decision follows the town’s goal of evaluating electric equipment options for lower long‑term maintenance and fuel costs. The council directed staff to document warranty details and local service options as part of the procurement process.
