Garland committee says it is tracking 63 of roughly 300 state interim charges

The Garland Public Affairs Committee heard an update on state interim charges from Ariel, the city’s legislative staff, who said the city received three packets covering two rounds of Senate interim charges and one packet of House interim charges. "We are actively tracking 63 of them," Ariel said.
Ariel told the committee the larger themes include property-tax changes, data-center and energy issues, and a broad review of city fees such as permit, inspection, utility connection and stormwater fees. She said the city is prioritizing which charges to follow and will provide hearing summaries as interim hearings progress.
Committee members asked for examples of municipal practices that likely prompted state attention. Staff cited municipally owned utilities that charge higher rates and then increase general-fund transfers as one recurring concern cited in Austin. Ariel said the city will focus first on the high-priority interim charges and then on medium and lower priorities as appropriate.
The committee approved the meeting minutes from Nov. 17 at the outset and heard no public comments; members closed the meeting after thanking staff for outreach work to legislators and partners.
