Calvert County student-services director outlines scope: wellness, safety and attendance

Cecilia Lewis, director of Student Services for Calvert County Public Schools, opened the presentation by saying the department’s mission centers on students’ wellbeing and safety and that Student Services operates as a hub for counseling, health, attendance work and safety supports. “Very specifically, what I love about about this and being here today is that the Department of Student Services is student wellness and, well‑being and safety,” Lewis said.
Lewis described the department’s leadership and staffing model — supervisors, a mental‑health coordinator, pupil personnel workers (PPWs), school counselors, psychologists, social workers, safety advocates and school nurses — and noted programs the office manages including home‑hospital instruction and alternative education. She listed staffing snapshots: six PPWs who each cover multiple schools, 26 school‑based nurses plus two nurse specialists and a nurse assigned to the infant‑toddler program.
Lewis stressed legal and regulatory responsibilities that guide the work, including FERPA and HIPAA rules when medical privacy is involved, and described regular coordination with the superintendent, state and local partners to ensure compliance. Committee members praised the report and requested follow‑up data on discipline outcomes and disaggregated disproportionality metrics; Lewis agreed to supply those numbers on request.
