Board discusses constable status and possible appointments after Godfrey re-election

Chair Susan Culp reported that Glen Godfrey was re-elected to the Town Constable position. Because Town Meeting passed an article authorizing the Selectboard to appoint up to two constables, attorney Jim Barlow informed the board that Godfrey will serve for 45 days in his elected capacity. The Selectboard said it will review job descriptions and other towns’ practices before making any appointments.
Town Clerk/Selectboard Assistant Chuck Schulze noted limits to the position without full police academy training and suggested the Selectboard consider engaging a constable as a liaison with the Caledonia County Sheriff’s Department (CCSD), Vermont State Police and neighborhood-watch networks. The board also discussed whether to adopt the Recreation Committee’s background-check service for the Fire Department.
