County receives $3.9 million HUD community-project award for Straws Mill bridge project

The County Judge informed the commissioners that Congressman Carter’s office notified the county of a $3,900,000 award through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s community project funding program for a Straws Mill Road bridge project submitted in 2023.
“All I got was the award letter,” the Judge said, noting that county staff must now contact grant administrators to determine execution steps, whether funds flow through the state or directly from HUD and any procurement requirements. Commissioners acknowledged the award but flagged uncertainty about whether the amount will cover total project costs and anticipated additional RFQ/contracting steps once the county confirms award terms.
Staff will research award routing, procurement requirements and project eligibility and return to the court with a plan to obligate and manage the funds.
