Windsor Locks High School Principal Dr. Rebecca Bissonnette and Assistant Principal Kristen Krupa updated the Board on vaping incidents and the school's response.
They reported 13 students suspended so far in 2024-25 compared with 21 in 2023-24, 33 in 2022-23 and 27 in 2021-22. "They noted that in 2024-2025 there have been 13 students suspended to date comparing those numbers to the past three years, 21 students in 2023-2024; 33 students in 2022-2023; and, 27 students in 2021-2022," the minutes state.
School staff described actions taken: use of vape detectors, student searches, bathroom monitors, limiting restroom access by stall count, ceiling-tile sweeps, increased police presence in hallways, restroom closures when monitors are unavailable, and disciplinary consequences including suspension and arrest in some cases. Principals said new hand-held detection wands have been ordered and will be used beginning after winter break as part of a broader prevention and enforcement plan.
Board members briefly discussed the operational and disciplinary implications for students and staff.
