Summary
Relay for Life organizers told council they raised $230,000 this year. In public comment, Kathy Schlick urged Mission Viejo voters to vote no on Measure Y (a proposed hotel tax increase), alleging the city's campaign materials mislead voters and accusing the Chamber of Commerce of supporting the council's position; council members responded on the record.

Relay for Life volunteers and survivors told the council their event raised $230,000 this year and noted the event's long history in Mission Viejo. "When we finished on the 21st, we were at $145,000 and then we had two more post event fundraisers ... we're up to $230,000 this year," a Relay representative said, thanking the city for support.
During public comment, Kathy Schlick, who identified herself as a Mission Viejo resident, urged voters to oppose Measure Y, the proposed transient‑occupancy (hotel) tax increase. Schlick criticized city informational materials she called "propaganda," said the materials misattribute problems to police services and use images designed to manipulate voters, and said she had filed complaints with authorities about the city's campaign activities. "Please vote no on Measure Y," she said.
Later in the meeting Councilmember Bucknam said materials left at the public podium had disappeared and referenced election‑related concerns; the city attorney noted there is video coverage of public areas. Council did not take immediate action on Schlick's allegations; the public‑comment record captures the complaint and the council's direction that staff and the city attorney are aware of the matter.
