The Shelby County Board of Commissioners opened its Oct. 14 meeting by presenting a proclamation to the Shelby County Fire Department after the department won the 2024 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.
"On Thursday, 08/22/2024, the Shelby County Fire Department was the recipient of the 2024 Secretary of Defense's Employer Support Freedom Award," a commissioner read during the meeting. Firefighter Angel Fagan, who nominated the department, told commissioners she submitted the nomination after seeing consistent support from the department during her deployment.
The commission also moved and approved a consent agenda that included a $4.7 million renovation contract for the courthouse at 140 Adams Avenue and a $48,600 contract for elevator engineering services at the A. Smith Jr. County Administration Building. Commissioners recorded eight ayes and one abstention on the consent vote.
