Planning commission backs mining-zone request for Snowville-area gravel pit

Box Elder County planning commissioners voted June 18 to forward a recommendation of approval for Z26-010, which would zone five parcels totaling 861.23 acres near 23185 N Frontage Road in the Snowville area to MG-EX (Mining, Quarry, Sand & Gravel Excavation). Commissioner Bonnie Robinson made the motion; Commissioner Jennifer Jacobsen seconded it and the motion passed unanimously.
Supporters said the site historically supplied gravel for I-84 in the 1970s and that the county draws from the pit. Brodie Calder, speaking for the applicant, said mining engineers have evaluated the property and a conditional use permit will address setbacks, berms, dust suppression and drainage containment. He also noted an interstate access (Exit 12) adjacent to the property, which the commission suggested be used to avoid routing heavy trucks through valley roads. Staff recommended approval, citing the site's prior use, remoteness and compatibility with adjacent agricultural land, subject to compliance with Article 5 and Chapter 3-9 of the county land-use code and other applicable laws.
The commission's recommendation will be forwarded to the Box Elder County Commission for final action; if approved, the applicant would still need to satisfy conditional use permit requirements and any road-use conditions.
