The Ionia County Board of Commissioners failed to appoint a replacement for the vacant District 3 seat after two rounds of paper-ballot voting at a March 17, 2026 special meeting.
In both rounds, Tim Ross received the votes of Commissioners Gordon Kelley and Terence M. Frewen, while Robert Simpson received the votes of Commissioners Scott Wirtz, Phil Hesche and Jack Shattuck; Carrie Bucholtz received no votes in both rounds. Commissioners indicated they would not change their votes to form a majority, and the board did not adopt an appointment that night. The board then voted to discontinue further voting and asked the clerk to research rules on declaring a permanent vacancy and holding a special election.
